If you are like most people, you have surely heard about BOTOX® by now. In fact, you probably have a friend or relative who has tried this treatment. However, BOTOX® treatments may still seem like something out of science fiction. After all, how do a few tiny injections seem to iron out lines and wrinkles on your face and provide a more youthful, toned appearance?
First, you must understand what BOTOX® really is. It is a liquid neuroprotein made from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. We use BOTOX® in such small doses that it does not provide permanent effects on the skin, and most of our clients do not have unwanted side effects from it. With today’s exact measurements, you do not have to worry about frozen facial expressions.
Second, you should understand what BOTOX® does beneath the surface of your skin. When we inject this liquid using a very tiny needle that will feel like a pinch, we are actually accessing your muscles. Beneath your skin are very tiny muscles that cause your facial expressions. When BOTOX® enters these muscles, it temporarily paralyzes them while still allowing your larger muscles to work, thus creating facial expressions. A typical treatment lasts approximately three to four months. The longer you get regular BOTOX® injections, the longer they should last. Some of our clients can wait six months between treatments.
Third, you should understand what types of lines and wrinkles respond best to BOTOX®. The first lines that show up on your face are usually expression lines, which form after years of making the same expressions, such as smiling or frowning. However, these lines tend to fade away when your face is at rest. Many practitioners also have good success with treating a myriad of other lines on the face and the neck as well as with such concerns as drooping brows and a thinned lip. However, BOTOX® is not the treatment of choice for static lines, which appear in the skin even when your face is at rest. These lines are often deep and are not formed any longer by the tiny muscle movements just beneath the skin.
It may be hard to know if BOTOX® will work to erase the lines and wrinkles that you have. However, if your lines and wrinkles are causing you grief, we invite you to visit us at Advanced Laser and Cosmetic Center to learn more. We have offices in West Chester, Dayton, and Englewood, OH.
