Stretch marks are caused by rapid stretching of the skin. Common causes include pregnancy, rapid weight gain, and rapid growth during adolescence. They are unsightly streaks or lines on the skin. They cause no health problems and tend to naturally fade over time, but many people would prefer to hasten this process in order to improve their appearance. There are several possible treatments all of which act via the same mechanism: inducing the growth of new collagen to fill in and contract the underlying skin defect. At Advanced Laser & Cosmetic Center we offer a stretch mark treatment that is non-surgical and non-ablative.
Fractional Laser Treatment
Our team of experts uses the CynoSure Palomar Icon™, the first laser approved by the FDA for the specific use of stretch mark treatment. Because this stretch mark treatment laser is non-ablative there is typically no downtime. Depending on the individual needs of the patient, between 4 and 6 treatments, scheduled at 3-month intervals, are generally recommended for best results. We will develop a personalized treatment plan with you at your consultation.
Laser treatments apply pulses of energy to the stretch mark that break down the scar tissue and induce new collagen fibers to grow to fill in the skin defect. A variety of different lasers can be used to induce this effect. Each treatment lasts for about 30 minutes. Stretch marks pose no health risk so laser treatments are cosmetic in nature.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks range in color from pink, white, red, blue, or purple, and they usually pop up after unexpected weight gain. They become even more visible after the weight is lost, such as on a woman’s abdomen after a baby is delivered. That being said, there are ways to prevent stretch marks from occurring and avoid stretch mark treatment in the future, but sometimes they are simply unavoidable. Stretch marks are usually associated with cellulite but they can also come from pregnancy, a growth spurt, or rapid muscle gain.
Regardless of the original of your stretch marks, the team at Advanced Laser & Cosmetic Center can help you fade them. Laser stretch mark treatment promotes the production of collagen and elastin in the treated areas, which forces your body to heal itself more efficiently.
